Cyber Crime and Cyber Ethics
Computer ethics is a set of moral principles that regulate the use of computers. Some of the computing ethics are to not use a computer to harm other people or to steal. Some common issues of computer ethics include intellectual property rights, such as copyrighted electronic material, privacy concerns and how computers affect society. As technology continues to advance, computer ethics continue to create ethical standards that address the new issues caused by new technologies. It would be easy to duplicate a copyrighted electronic content but computer ethics suggest not to without its owner’s or author’s authorization. It is also unethical to copy or use software you have not yet paid for. The internet makes it easy for someone to access someones personal information, what so ever, it does not make it ethical to do so. The importance of computer ethics has grown, due to the growth of the internet, along with privacy issues.  Concerns regarding computing technologies, such as spyware and web browser cookies, have questioned ethical behavior in technologies. Computer ethics are designed to maintain or increase rights and freedoms. Also to protect the individuals from harm. It also intends to help in the prevention of cyber crime. The ethics also help maintain a set of guidelines for communication and interaction between individuals through the internet. That way no one is harmed or crosses the limit on what they say on the internet.
Cyber crime is criminal activity done using computers and the internet. It is considered to be one of the fastest growing areas in crime. The speed convenience and anonymity that technology offers now, has been of a benefit to criminals to commit a diverse range of criminal activities. In the past cyber crime has been done by one person or a group of individuals, but an emerging trend has changed that. Now organized crime syndicates and  technology professionals are  working together using their resources and expertise to commit cyber crimes. One of the most prominent forms of cyber crime is identity theft, where the internet is used to steal a person’s personal information. Identity theft is done by phishing or pharming. Both methods lead internet users to fake websites that appear to be legit, where they are asked to enter their personal information. A way to prevent identity theft would be to check the URL or web address of a site to make sure it is legitimate. Cyber crime includes downloading illegal music files to stealing millions of dollars from online bank accounts. It also includes non-monetary offenses, such as creating and distributing viruses on other computers or posting confidential information online. Some examples of cyber crimes are attacks against data & systems, distribution of inappropriate images of children and email scams. The most serious threat to national and international security is the internet use by terrorists. The FBI helps prevent cyber crime and investigate crimes that have already been committed. Using antivirus and spyware that blocks certain software helps prevent some cyber crimes, as well as being careful when entering your personal information online.
